| Spousal Maintenance – Minnesota

Spousal maintenance, also known as “maintenance” and “alimony,” is financial compensation paid to a former spouse following a divorce. It arises when a divorce will leave one member in a position where they can’t financially provide for themselves. Spousal maintenance is determined on a case-to-case basis. It can be mandated for a short time or lifelong. Sometimes spousal maintenance is not deemed necessary and results in what is called a clean break.

Navigating Spousal Maintenance

Spousal maintenance usually ends when the mandate is fulfilled, when the person receiving compensation re-marries, or if either member in the spousal maintenance agreement dies. Other factors can determine the end of spousal maintenance, but these vary depending on the individual case.
